The Aim and Mission in the Establishment of the World Wing Chun Union and the Hong Kong Wing Chun Union Over the past two centuries since Wumei Shitais (五枚師太) initial instruction and Yan Yongchuns (嚴詠春) further development, Wing Chun Kuen has reached the worlds five continents and seven seas, and become one of the most popular Chinese martial arts. In these two hundred years, Wing Chun Kuen has met its challenges and stood the test of time, it has seen various changes and evolutions, and it has continued its vibrant development and produced venerable icons. Wing Chun Kuen has its own unique characteristics, with simplicity and compactness in its style, and richness in its content. Its concepts of defense and attack are clear, arm moves diverse and versatile, techniques logical and philosophical. It is these elements in Wing Chun Kuen that have made it the most widely practiced traditional southern style Chinese martial art. For various reasons, Wing Chun Kuen in the past was mainly taught verbally and personally, with little written records. In addition, it has gone through varying studies and interpretations by different individuals over time. This has made Wing Chun Kuen a martial art with a large number of branches and colorfully variations. However, they all share the same origin and are in fact one family. It is therefore important for us to try to understand their overarching commonalities and to accept minor diversities. We should seek unity and cooperation, in order to for each generation to extend Wing Chun Kuens heritage, consolidate its successes and advance its development. The World Wing Chun Union and Hong Kong Wing Chun Union are established with the hope that we can put an end to differences among schools, better unite fellow practitioners around the world, and provide a platform for Wing Chun Kuens development and communication to the public. Wing Chun Kuen is a treasure of Chinese martial arts. Although it originates in China, it should belong to the world. While we in this generation are fortunate to have the opportunity to learn this art, we hope to be able to continue the tradition and make uniting Wing Chun our first step toward one martial arts world for everybody. We believe that given todays favorable combination of time, geography and people, Wing Chun Kuen, with two hundred years of magnificent history, is poised to experience even richer developments and greater successes. |
