The Ranking System for Wing Chun will be formulated by Hong Kong Wing Chun Union/ World Wing Chun Union for monitoring and implementation, to assess student’s skill level and for unity in order for the Wing Chun essence and philosophy to be extended to the world.

  1. Eligibility
    • It is not essential for examination entrants to be members of the Hong Kong Wing Chun Union/ World Wing Chun Union but those wishing to attend the Ranking System course must be members of Hong Kong Wing Chun Union / World Wing Chun Union.
    • Applicants wishing to be placed on the Ranking System list must have either obtained a Ranking System certificate from Hong Kong Wing Chun Union / World Wing Chun Union or attended a course approved by the Hong Kong Wing Chun Union / World Wing Chun Union and enroll for the examination held by Hong Kong Wing Chun Union / World Wing Chun Union.
  2. Application Procedure
    • Enroll for the examination of the Wing Chun Ranking (Dan) System
    • Entrants must pay the course fee and the examination fee (depending on the level of ranking entered).
    • Complete the Wing Chun Ranking (Dan) System form and send together with 2 recent photographs and a crossed cheque made payable to “Hong Kong Wing Chun Union” to: Unit B, 2/F, Jone Mult Factory Building, 169 Wai Yip Street, Kwun Tong.

      The participant’s name and contact number should be written on the back of the cheque. These should be received by the Union one month before the examination date.

Teaching Assistant level Rank Four (Four Dan) Completed wooden dummy and basic wooden dummy applications HK$500.00
Instructor level Rank Five
(Five Dan)
(Level 1 coach)
Completed all sequences and wooden dummy, attended and completed a 12-hour coaching course and obtained certificate HK$900.00
Rank Six
(Six Dan)
(Level 2 coach)
Completed six and a half point pole and eight cutting knives, attended and completed a 12-hour level 2 coaching course and obtained certificate HK$1,200.00
Rank Seven
(Seven Dan)
Familiar with all Wing Chun techniques, knives, stick work, stump and have more than 10 years experience as a Wing Chun coach and able to create Wing Chun skills from the knowledge gained. -
Honor level Rank Eight
(Eight Dan)
Have a certain reputation and status as a senior Wing Chun master in a Wing Chun school and undergo examination by the Union. -
Rank Nine
(Nine Dan)
Have made an enormous contribution to the Wing Chun school, recommended by the Union and passed by ½ of its members. -
Rank Ten
(Ten Dan)
This rank will be the highest honour. It will require recommendation by ¾ of the Union’s members. -
  • Rank One to Four: Must attend a course held or recognized by the Union, before enrolling in the examination.
  • Rank Five to Seven: Must enroll in, complete and take the examination in the Ranking course organized by the Union.
  • Successful candidates will be awarded “Hong Kong Wing Chun Union Wushu Ranking (Dan) certificate”.
  • All candidates must meet the Ranking requirements to obtain a certificate. In case of failure, HK$150 re-examination fee is required within one month of the examination date. If re-examination results in failure, attendance of the course is required before re-taking the examination.
  • The Union will not accept individual applications for Rank (Dan) Eight to Ten.
